Hallmark Engine Optimization: Why Audience-First Content Beats AI Slop

If you think about it, Hallmark movies are the perfect example of great SEO… and HEO. Let me explain.

It’s not just their keyword-rich titles (though A Christmas Together with You or A Royal Winter might as well have been written by a search engine) but because they work. They know their audience. They deliver exactly what that audience wants, over and over again.

They understand HEO…in this case it isn’t just Hallmark Engine Optimazation, it’s actually Human Engine Optimization.

That’s not a bad model for all business marketing. In fact, it’s the opposite of what too many marketers are doing right now: chasing algorithms instead of connection.

We need Human Engine Optimization.

The Vicious Cycle: When Algorithms Drive the Story

Ten years ago, YouTube’s toddler programming broke.

Videos were being generated by creators chasing the algorithm. They used keyword-stuffed titles like “Hulk, Peppa Pig, SpongeBob, Spider-Man Surprise Eggs, Trucks!” They were soulless, sometimes nonsensical, and often made by people or software far removed from their audience.

They existed to trick the system. And for a while, it worked… until the system caught up.

That cycle has resurfaced today as AI slop: the flood of procedurally generated, low-value content made by people (or bots) trying to game AI-driven discovery systems. It’s fast. It’s cheap. It’s forgettable.

Chasing the algorithm may earn clicks in the short term, but it destroys trust over time. If your content lacks a human heartbeat, your audience (and Google) will move on.

The lesson? Longevity doesn’t come from black-hat or gray-hat tricks. It comes from substance.

The Fix: Human Engine Optimization (HEO)

Google’s own helpful content updates confirm it: quality wins.

At Black Raven, we call our approach Human Engine Optimization — making content humans actually like.

HEO means:

  • Writing for people first, algorithms second.
  • Creating value that converts, not just content that ranks.
  • Building trust through clarity, empathy, and credibility.

While traditional SEO chases clicks and ad revenue, HEO focuses on results that matter: conversion, loyalty, and reputation.

It’s a long game. But great content performs anywhere — on Google, LinkedIn, or in a printed brochure — because it connects.

Our own process reflects that:

  1. Reveal: Identify the real audience, their needs, and what motivates them.
  2. Create: Craft content that meets those needs in the brand’s authentic voice.
  3. Deploy: Share it strategically across digital channels.
  4. Optimize: Review results and refine continuously.

That’s HEO in action: grounded in purpose, guided by people.

The Future: GEO and the LLM Risk

A new acronym is rising: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

It’s about writing content so it shows up in AI-driven results from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini. Ironically, the best way to optimize for GEO is to double down on HEO.

But proceed with caution.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are derivative by design. They don’t always understand context, and they often hallucinate. We’ve learned this lesson through experience and we’ve developed ways to keep it from happening, but it takes a lot of human attention.

That’s why relying on AI alone to create or optimize content is risky. You need subject matter expertise. The human oversight that ensures accuracy, nuance, and brand alignment.

At Black Raven, we pair AI efficiency with expert guidance. It’s not automation; it’s augmentation.

From Hallmark to High-Performing Content

Hallmark starts with a keyword (“Christmas,” “Love,” “Home”) but it doesn’t stop there. Human producers, actors, and editors turn that keyword into something people actually want to watch.

That’s HEO: combining the right keywords with the right humans.

Marketing works the same way. You can chase clicks or you can cultivate connection. Only one leads to lasting results.
